The ‘other half’ of the diary!

Most of what goes up on Instagram comes from me, Kezia.  While I tend to do the posting, the journey is definitely both mine and my husband’s.  In between his last two semesters, I finally persuaded Jared to share some of his story so he’s written a (fab!) blog post about his journey which you can read HERE.  Ahead of it though I thought I’d shoot a quick 10 (but it became 14) questions at him so you can get to know the other face behind the food!  So here it is, 10 14 questions with Jared Neusch.

KN: First off, how do you feel about the world seeing photographs of what you eat?!
JN: How do I feel?! (he jokes) I feel hungry, and virtuously patient for two minutes while I watch every meal get photographed!  I’ve learnt to wait a few minutes looking at food but it’s fine – you’re welcome world.

KN:Where did you grow up?
JN: Austin, Texas.

KN: What’s your favourite home cooked meal?
JN: I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for a big plate of beef stroganoff on brown rice.

KN: And your favourite meal out?
JN: Ooh that’s hard – it would be a tie between two burger spots.  First, San Francisco’s Umami where I get the Manly burger with parmesan truffle fries, and second, a DIY burger from Hopdoddy’s in Austin with a wholewheat bun, grass fed beef, bacon, avo, a fried egg, truffle aioli, and more parmesan truffle fries.  You can’t beat truffles.

KN: Ok, so you’ve been married to me for 4 years and I’ve seen you roll your eyes at some of what I eat… what’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen so far?!
JN: When you eat a whole raw beet like an apple. Weird. Crunch.

KN: Favourite city in the world?
JN: Just one?! I can’t do that. But I love home so Redding, then Austin, London, San Francisco, and Portland.

KN: What’s your favourite Novel?
JN: Perelandra by CS Lewis

KN: What’s a food you never (think) you’ll eat?
JN: Olives, mushrooms, sushi. Never.

KN: You answered that quickly (!) so on the same note, is there anything you thought you’d never eat that you now have?!
JN: Yes, raw vegan (what?!) food by mistake on my first date with you (while sharing a table with another couple)! Texan and vegan don’t tend to get mixed. That, and the green juice I’m voluntarily drinking now.

KN: So there’s hope for olives…? Ok no. Ok.

What was the last meal you cooked?
JN: Well you kind of destroyed my reasons to learn to cook, I was doing well pre marriage, but avocado toast… does that count? And I like to count taking us out for dinner as my contribution to ‘cooking’.

KN: What’s your 9-5?
JN: I’m on staff at Bethel Church here in Redding where I manage an internship program, and I’m also getting my Masters degree at Simpson University.

KN: As your wife I can attest to how hard you work with a job and studying, what’s your favourite thing to do with an evening off at home?
JN: Pick up curry from our local Indian (sub homemade brown rice), put up the projector and watch a movie with you, all after putting in a big workout and crashing on the couch. But if I’m on my own, a good craft beer, and a nerdy theology book.

KN: You said ‘a workout’, how do you stay in shape day to day?
JN: Well I keep moving all day, I bought a stand up desk (for both my home and work offices) with a treadmill underneath at home too.  Then I take walks too if I can’t make it to the gym, and I’ll be honest, I’m definitely more in shape during NBA season… cos the gym is where I go to watch games!  I either do the elliptical, or push myself on the treadmill for a more intense workout.

KN: Ok so finally, tell us – why should people read your blog post?!
JN: Getting healthy can appear to be a pretty giant and intimidating mountain to climb.  In the blog post I talk about the thing that’s probably the biggest key for creating sustainable change in my diet, and it isn’t being perfect, but it is something that’s changing my life.

Read Jared’s post about about his number key for sustainable change HERE!
